Today we visited the new Bert-Brecht-Park, the first section of which opened in July 2026. The roughly 14,000-square-meter park is located in the middle of the new residential development “Village im Dritten” on the Aspanggründe in the 3rd district, where construction is currently still underway.

By the way, the entire district uses Austria’s largest geothermal probe field for sustainable temperature management: While heat pumps reliably deliver cozy warmth to residents in winter, they simply reverse the principle in summer—acting like a giant refrigerator, they extract summer heat from the rooms and store it deep underground as sustainable cooling for the district.

How to Get There

Since half of the Village is still under construction, getting there is currently a bit circuitous:

• Via St. Marx: We took tram line 71 to St. Marx, then walked through the Trienna Shopping Center and up the ramp behind the Biocenter S-Bahn station to Otto-Preminger-Straße. From there, you bypass the construction sites and reach the park directly from the back via Maly-Nagl-Promenade. This route is much pleasant than walking along the busy Landstraßer Hauptstraße or the Gürtel.
• From Landstraßer Gürtel: Alternatively, you can reach the park via Gunther-Philipp-Weg to Ljuba-Welitsch-Promenade and head down from there.

Toddler Area

The fully fenced sand and mud area is a real highlight for the little ones. A spacious pergola provides shade, and charming details like a large wooden lizard invite kids to climb.

We especially loved the mud area with the little wooden bar stools, where children can sit comfortably and play with water and sand:

Right next to the toddler area, bubbling ground nozzles provide a welcome cool-down on hot summer days:

Another highlight is the fantastic watercourse along the slope. Equipped with three play fountains and various dam gates, water can be dammed up and redirected to your heart’s content:

Climbing and Slides

Since the site of Village im Dritten is built on a slight incline, the slope in the park is cleverly utilized: Various climbing options, ropes, wooden logs, and slides spark enthusiasm among younger and older kids alike.

Amenities, Swings, and Relaxation

The rest of the amenities leave nothing to be desired either: Visitors have access to a modern drinking fountain and a clean, public restroom facility directly in the park. In addition to classic swings, cozy hammocks invite you to relax, while spacious lawn areas offer plenty of room to unwind.

Nature & Biodiversity: Protecting the Sand Lizard

We especially appreciated how much thought went into nature during planning: Over 148 new trees, native perennial beds, and gravel turf paths promote biodiversity. Special attention has been given to local sand lizards, with dedicated stone piles and “stepping stone habitats” created just for them.

Conclusion

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed Bert-Brecht-Park! Thanks to its impressive size, successful natural design elements, and diverse play zones, it offers families an immense amount of space to run around, play, and explore. We’re already looking forward to the completion of the second section at the end of 2027—with a planned sports court and dog zone, the area will become even more versatile. Until then, we also hope that access around the construction sites becomes a bit easier.
