We had heard that the Schwechat river in Baden near Vienna isn’t very deep – perfect for little city pirates who love playing with water and stones. So we set off to explore. But Baden near Vienna has much more to offer for older kids too: the Thermalstrandbad, beautiful walking paths, exciting castle ruins like Rauhenstein and Rauheneck, and much more.

Holzrechenplatz Playground

Our tour began with a bus ride from the train station to Rauhenstein stop. Right next to it is a great playground with lots of space to run around. Handy: There’s a public toilet at the bus stop.

Path in Helenental

From there we crossed the Eugen Bridge and continued along the path in Helenental. We especially like that cyclists ride on the opposite side of the stream – the path itself is pleasantly quiet and also stroller-friendly. Dogs must be kept on a leash.

Places to Stop for Refreshments

Right after the playground, the cozy Cyclists’ Stop at the tennis court invites you to take a break. A little further along, directly on the path, is the idyllic Forest Inn Hauswiese – also highly recommended.

The Best Wild Swimming Spots

Small paths lead down to the water again and again – ideal for a quick cool down. The stream is shallow, with a gentle current.

  • Antons Bridge: Small islands invite you to linger, and the Urtelstein/Engelstein offer older kids and teenagers a climbing traverse (“deep water solo”). Unfortunately, it’s a bit noisy because of the nearby road.
  • Henrietten Bridge: Slightly farther from the road and therefore quieter.
  • Beautiful with deeper water in the other direction (towards Baden). Unfortunately, there’s also a dog zone there and the path down isn’t very stroller-friendly.

Tip: Don’t forget mosquito repellent!

Thermalstrandbad Baden

Probably the best swimming option is the Thermalstrandbad Baden.

The toddler area is lovingly designed.

Children are allowed in one of the warm thermal pools when accompanied – or can enjoy the massage jets.

There’s a very sunny sand area and a more secluded area with trees, though the latter is often quite busy.

The playground in the associated Weilburg Park is only accessible via steps – not ideal with a stroller.

Doblhoff Park Playground

On the way back we visited Doblhoff Park – there’s plenty of shade and spacious green areas here.

Additionally, the La Gacilly Festival was happening at the time: We were able to admire impressive works by international photo artists.

Insider Tip: Thermenrestaurant Ernst Nossek

A real insider tip for an affordable, healthy lunch is the Thermenrestaurant Ernst Nossek near the Römertherme.

However: Some spa guests are sensitive to noisy children – families might be better off sitting outside.

Conclusion

Baden near Vienna is definitely worth a trip – especially in summer and of course for hiking in the other seasons! There are plenty of opportunities for cooling off, splashing, and swimming, and for older children, hidden ruins and caves to discover.
