With the Stadtpiraten we don’t just go treasure hunting in Vienna – we also equip ourselves with real pirate gear! And the best part: you can easily make it yourself. All you need is a simple sheet of paper.

Let’s get started – first fold your pirate hat, and if you like, build a ship right after that will carry you across the seven seas (or at least the Danube!).

The Pirate Hat

You need:

  • 1 sheet of newspaper or A3 paper (so the hat will fit on your head).

Here’s how:

Step 1:

Place a rectangular sheet of paper (newspaper or A3 works best) upright in front of you and fold it once down the middle.

Tip:

If you use a newspaper sheet, it’s often already folded in the middle – then your first step is already done.

Step 2:
Now fold the paper once more, this time from left to right – and open it again right away. The middle line stays as your guide.

Step 3:
Fold the two top corners down to the middle line, forming a pointed triangle.

Step 4:
Fold the bottom edge of the sheet up – first at the front, then at the back. This creates the brim of the hat.

Done!
Put the hat on your head, draw skulls or treasure maps on it – and you’re ready for treasure hunting in Vienna.

The Pirate Ship

Step 5:

Hold the finished hat with the open side facing you. Grab the open corners on the left and right and press them inwards together.

Step 6:
Flatten the hat – now it looks like a diamond shape.

Step 7:
Fold the bottom tip of the diamond up, turn it around, and repeat the step on the back side.

Step 8:
Press the two ends together once more – and flatten it again. You now have another small square.

Step 9:
Now pull the ends apart one last time – and the ship unfolds!

Done!
A real pirate ship with sails is ready to carry you across the seven seas (or the Danube).

Ready for the Treasure Hunt

Now you’ve got everything a pirate needs: a hat for the captain and a ship for the whole crew. Try it out right away – maybe your next treasure isn’t only in Vienna, but already waiting in your living room.
